This is a simple countdown widget to the release of the new Fedora 12. Get the Fedora 12 countdown widget. Distro release counters seem to be popping more frequently. The first one that I posted about was the Ubuntu 8.10. It appears as though the Ubuntu counter resets for each release. So if you embed the Ubuntu countdown widget in your site, it will display a new counter for the next impending release. Sweet! Does anyone know which distro was the first to release a “distro release date counter” widget? Do you by chance have an image of that counter? Related posts:A major Ubuntu…

Will the 2009 Winter Olympics widget appear here?
3 Nov 2009 | 12:59 pmSince the 2008 Beijing Summer Games are over…I’m waiting to see if this widget will auto-switch to the 2009 Winter Games. I am actually excited to possibly see some new features for the widgets this year. TechCrunch excerpt: “NBC Prepares For The Winter Olympics With Silverlight, HD Video, And Facebook Connect“: NBC will be using a video player based on Microsoft Silverlight technology to offer full HD videos. Except this time, the video player will have DVR-like functionality, with the ability to rewind the video, highlight clips and save them. NBC’s old slug… -
Twitter List Widget
3 Nov 2009 | 9:11 amTwitter has recently enabled the Twitter List feature for all users. Now they have released the Twitter List Widget which will display any Twitter list you choose. It appears to be a simple widget, yet you can alter many of the colors and choose the exact size that you desire. This is a JavaScript widget so there could be limitations as to your ability to embed this into your blog. Below, I have created the TechCrunch Twitter List widget. I picked TechCrunch because I was sure that they had already taken advantage of the Twitter List feature. I was not disappointed either…as you can… -
Power Pinball widget from widgipedia and ninjawiki
3 Nov 2009 | 4:11 amPower Pinball is an online pinball game that you can now embed into your blog. This is a fun pinball game that utilizes two boards (side by side). Your ball can make it onto the second board through various passages and once over there you have another set of flippers to control. The controls are simple, right and left arrow keys equal right and left flippers. Down arrow controls the plunger to shoot the ball and the up arrow is the “tilt” function. Unfortunately the embed requires a large area. 940 X 680. I suggest placing this at the bottom of your site, out of the posting area. -

Google Music Onebox
31 Oct 2009 | 6:22 amIt was just a matter of time, really, and I suppose that that time is NOW. Google has announced some details about its service regarding music online. Dubbed Google Music Onebox, the service basically allows users to stream music without additional effort. All that users would have to do is search for music on Google. Naturally, they had to partner up with music streaming services in order to make this possible. Some music streaming services that have been named as Google’s partners in this venture are Lala, iLike, Pandora, Imeem, and Rhapsody. This is where widgets come into the… -
Never Forget The Time Again!
30 Oct 2009 | 2:40 amI am not the type to check the time every 15 minutes, but I do hate it when people never keep track of time. I am sure you know a lot of these people. They would tell you they’ll meet you at a certain hour and come an hour late. Or they would say that they would be home at a certain time, and arrive much much later. The usual excuse is “Oh, sorry I forgot the time!” If you have the tendency to be like this, even at work, then here are widgets that will make keeping track of the time a much more fun experience. Clock Widgets is a web site that specializes in – you got… -

Show Off With The New PokerDIY Widget
9 Sep 2009 | 4:33 amPoker has become a huge thing in the recent years. Perhaps it is due to the immense exposure that it has enjoyed, thanks to celebrities playing poker and to poker players becoming celebrities themselves. I’d like to think, though, that poker is such an exciting and challenging game that this popularity couldn’t be helped – exposure or not. In any case, it is quite common for people to create their own poker leagues these days. Bars hold their own tournaments even. If you have a poker league or tournament of your own, you might want to check out the widget from PokerDIY,… -

Is Facebook and Twitter Referral Traffic Wildly Overhyped?
30 Oct 2009 | 1:42 pmThere was an interesting (and grossly underreported) bit of referral traffic data posted by ad network Chitika about a month ago. Chitika looked at referral data for more than 120M impressions across 60,000 sites and concluded that Search remains the undisputed king of traffic referrals - and it's not close: According to Chitika, search accounts for all but a rounding error of referral traffic. Social (sites like Facebook, StumbleUpon, and Twitter) are growing as a referral segment, but accounted for only 0.55% of referrals in September. Twitter referrals actually fell,… -
Go Big, Go Horizontal
29 Oct 2009 | 12:56 pmA few years ago, I was running my site, RateItAll, out of a coffee shop. It was profitable, and had about 600K users but I was having a really hard time keeping the site up. Despite the help of some very good contract developers, and an affordable host who was trying their best to help me, I just didn't have - or know people who had - the technical skills to scale the site.I had reached a plateau. So I went out to try and raise some money and get some help. I got meetings with a bunch of big name venture capitalists - Sequoia, Battery, MDV, Hummer Winblad, Trinity,… -
eBay and Widgetbox Team up for Commerce Widgets
11 Sep 2009 | 9:56 amWidget powered commerce is an area that has long interested me - see my posts on Adgregate Markets, ThisNext, Kaboodle, Cartfly, Zazzle / CafePress, Edgeio, MPire, and ThisNext. I just learned that eBay has partnered with Widgetbox to allow eBay sellers to convert eBay RSS feeds to widgets. This is a baby step to be sure - companies like Cartfly and Adgregate Markets are being far more aggressive about functionality within the widget itself and are focused exclusively on commerce, while Widgetbox's RSS to widget publisher is a bit more general purpose. But you can bet that eBay… -
A Watershed Moment in the Blog Commenting Wars?
26 Aug 2009 | 10:46 amI've long considered blog comments to be one of the more fascinating social media startup battlegrounds in terms of the pace of innovation, the importance of the channel for distribution, and the lessons that can be learned by any company looking to build cross domain features. From where I'm sitting, it appears that TechCrunch is evaluating the two major competing blog commenting services to be the default provider for TechCrunch comments: Disqus and JS-Kit.Here's Michael Arringon on JS-Kit's new product ECHO:this appears to be quite different. we’re going to spend some time… -

Unbundling the iPhone - Rise of Android
28 Oct 2009 | 3:50 pmApple shocked the world when they introduced the Mac. It was the perfect fusion of art and technology and unleashed the minds of a generation to user in the Personal Computer (PC) era. But that was just the problem. It was the PC era, not the Mac era. Although Apple built and led the initial personal computer market, they did not ultimately shape its destiny - Microsoft did. It seems like they might be at it again with iPhone. Except this time, there’s a new player in OS land - Google. Apple is the best in the world at creating fantastic user experiences delivered via the… -
AddThis becomes Switchboard for Sharing Web Content!
22 Sep 2009 | 3:35 pmVIA ADDTHIS BLOG: At AddThis, our vision is to empower publishers to enable their users to share anything, to anyone, anywhere. Today, we are realizing a big part of that vision. Over the last year, the number of requests we have received for additional services grew faster than ever before. As we manually added support for more sharing destinations, the expanded list of services became so long that it was getting harder for users to find the services they used most often. Today, we’re introducing the first community-driven platform to take advantage of this demand, which enables content to… -
Tweetmeme takes flight
14 Sep 2009 | 4:31 pmSo I have been using Tweetmeme for a while now. Got curious today and checked out how they were doing from a traffic perspective and was amazed by the results. In less than a year, they have grown to over 15MM unique users. More stunning perhaps, is that they are catching up to the current leader in the category Digg. At this rate, they could potentially be bigger than Digg within a year. Now, as much as it is interesting that they are closing the gap with Digg, the more interesting thing is how this demonstrates the power of social recommendations. Tweetmeme has no original… -
Advertising smaller than we thought? It’s all about relationships.
26 Aug 2009 | 3:56 pmDespite the little hiccup (be nice) we are experiencing in online advertising, experts widely agree that the market is set to grow a ton over the next several years. Given the rise in Social Media, however, I have been thinking that maybe - just maybe - advertising (specifically) might be a bit smaller an opportunity. Before you go crazy, I am not saying it will be smaller than today. What I am saying, is that it is smaller than we project. Why? Because dollars traditionally spent today on advertising will shift to Customer Relationship Management. Advertising as it exists today is… -
Ambient Socialization
13 Jul 2009 | 5:01 amUntil recently, the vast majority of socialization has been direct. If I wanted to find out what my friend was listening to, or reading, I would ask. Instant messaging and e-mail facilitated this model - requiring someone to directly engage with a person via a platform to begin and track conversation. Well, things are ch-ch-changing. With the rise of feed-centric applications like Facebook and Twitter, a new form of communication has emerged - ambient socialization. Ambient socialization is communication initiated simply by being. I alluded to this concept in a post last August…

Update On FeedDemon Creator, Nick Bradbury
2 Nov 2009 | 7:00 amMany of you may know that in 2005, NewsGator acquired FeedDemon, an RSS reader for PCs that was then integrated into the entire NewsGator RSS ecosystem. When we acquired FeedDemon its creator, Nick Bradbury, officially became a NewsGator employee. Since then, our enterprise business has grown faster than anticipated and NewsGator has started to focus increasingly on Social Sites for enterprise organizations. Because of that, we recently made the decision to shut down NewsGator online and have our RSS readers sync with Google Reader. As a result of this change,… -
